It’s been fun and exciting watching new restaurants and cafes sprout like mushrooms all over Quezon City and the rest of Metro Manila. Seeing young chefs and not so young ones establish themselves in the culinary or restaurant scene. From foreign chefs to local ones making names for themselves, it’s been a good how many years for foodies so far.
But let’s not forget the oldies. The ones that have already made a mark in the restaurant scene. They haven’t lost their glory. In fact, I prefer “old” restaurants like my all-time favorite UNO over the new players. I’d choose UNO over Stella, Wild Flour, and so many others without second thoughts. And it’s a good thing I had a chance to dine there again last week before bringing my sick little girl to the doctor.
UNO is my go-to resto for downright good food and service.
We always start our meals with bread and butter. You can’t go wrong with breads at UNO. Always freshly baked. I especially love the crusty kind.

This is the new menu. The resto changes its menu quarterly so there’s always something new to try and surprise you.

UNO also offers daily specials that comes with a choice of soup or salad. I chose this Potato and Leek soup that day.

Char-grilled Beef Tenderloin with Miso Sauce. Part of the Daily Specials which always consist of Meat and Poultry and Fish and Seafood. Btw, fish courses here are top-notch but I wasn’t in the mood for fish that day.

MG always goes for either chicken or pasta. She ordered the macaroni with bacon and egg. This is a no-brainer. Although UNO has no kid’s menu, there are always dishes that kids would love and this is one of them. Must-try too is the Macaroni and Cheese and even if it’s not on the menu, the Chef can accommodate your order and can whip up Macaroni and Cheese as per request.

UNO serves one of the best coffees around. Even better than most coffee chains. It’s just brewed coffee but they do it well.

UNO is the perfect resto for family lunches, initimate meetings and come dinner, it turns into an awesome date place.

It’s been years, and UNO is still our place. I don’t even remember any resto before that. You’d definitely find us here dining on any given day.
Our typical weekday lunch.
Complimentary bread basket which the resto bakes fresh daily. I especially love the whole wheat foccacia and ciabatta. Best with butter or balsamic vinegar.
This was lunch last week. Prime Pork Rib Chop or something…tasted something similar to our Adobo but better. Btw, this was son’s order.
And this was my order of Beef Rendang.
And this was just last Wednesday.
My little girl’s order of Clams Casino & Garlic Spaghetti.
My son and I both had the flame-broiled chicken with its super delish mojo sauce.
The Mojo Sauce.
We also ordered Seafood Soup. I was glad that there was a piece of crab in it.
Son and daughter goofing around while we waited for our food.

This weight gain is not fun at all. I have not been watching what I eat lately. Case in point, our Hong Kong trip. I must have eaten all the carbs I could get my hands on and sink my teeth in. It was a crazy carbo loading phase for the past four days. I thought this carbo phase would be over as soon as I set foot in Manila but I was dead wrong. I miss eating good food as we only ate mostly fast food in Hong Kong. So the first thing we did after we got back from our trip was lunch at UNO. And lunch again the following day. And lunch again the day after that. I guess the only thing left for me to do to lose weight is to become a fitness instructor and get the necessary personal trainer certifications.
Because will power and self-discipline are not enough to resist all this…

If there’s one thing we eat a lot at home and in restaurants, it’s chicken. Chicken, in my opinion, is the most versatile meat. You can roast it, fry it, or make a stew or soup with it. It generally has less cholesterol, less fat compared to most meats. I’m talking about the meat and not the skin. Chicken skin is a whole other food group. =)
Chicken makes for perfect dinners, lunches and even sandwiches and salads. Actually, I’m immediately drawn to any chicken recipes and I’m still looking out for an adobo chicken recipe that’s better than mine. Anyway, our love for chicken last week was very evident in the places we ate at and the food I prepared at home.

It’s true what they say that friendships you established during high school are the only true friends worth keeping. I learned this the hard way. Most of my friends in high school are now abroad but we see each other regularly and communicate over at Facebook and through email. I’ve met more friends along the way while missing the company of my friends overseas. But you know what, I don’t need to go looking for superficial friendships. In life, you’re lucky if you have one true friend. God must love me so much coz I have a bunch. We may not see each other often but I know they’re just there. And I know we’ll be friends for life.
Nancy and husband are here in Manila for a visit. And of course, we couldn’t pass up the chance to dine in our favorite resto. Even before their trip here, dining at UNO was already in their itinerary. Come to think of it, we have been dining here for years. We’ve seen how this establishment prospered and expanded over the past 12 or so years. From a simple coffee and pasta place with the best flourless chocolate cake to a more extensive but carefully selected menu with freshly-baked breads daily and more dessert choices. The resto now has a second floor which can turn into a function room to accommodate parties of 20 to 30 people.

Sorry, no food shots. We were all so busy talking and catching up that I totally forgot to take pictures of our lunch. This always happens when you’re in such good company.
